Free SRT generator for any video
Drop a video, and this SRT generator turns the speech into timed subtitles on your own computer. Download a ready .srt file, free, with nothing uploaded.
What an SRT file is
SRT (short for SubRip) is the most widely used subtitle format. It's a plain text file with a numbered list of subtitles. Each one has a start time, an end time and one or two lines of text. Times are written as hours, minutes, seconds and milliseconds, like 00:01:02,500.
Because it's plain text, you can open an SRT file in any text editor. Because it's so common, almost every video player, editing program and video platform can read it. The subtitles stay separate from the video, so you can fix a typo without touching the video.
How to turn a video into an SRT file
Wolfcaps is a free SRT generator that runs in your browser. The AI listens to the speech on your own computer, so your video is never uploaded.
- 1Open Video → subtitles and drop your video (MP4, MKV, MOV, WebM, AVI, TS/MTS, WMV or FLV). For a recording without a picture, use Audio → transcript.
- 2In Transcribe this video?, choose the spoken language (English, Hebrew or Russian) and Balanced or Best. The model downloads once, the first time.
- 3Wait while the AI writes the subtitles. Wolfcaps shows an estimate first. On a recent desktop GPU, a 10-minute English video takes about a minute.
- 4Click a line to hear it and fix the text. The Full editor lets you adjust timing on a waveform.
- 5Click Export…, choose Subtitle file, pick SRT and click Save SRT.
That's the whole video to SRT process: no account, no watermark, no upload.
Where to use an SRT file
- Video players.
Put the .srt in the same folder as the video, with the same name (for example movie.mp4 and movie.srt). Many players, VLC for example, load it automatically.
- YouTube and other video platforms.
Add the SRT as a subtitle or caption file when you upload your video.
- Video editing programs.
Many can import an SRT and place the subtitles on the timeline.
- Other languages.
Translate the subtitles in Wolfcaps first, then export an SRT for each language.
If you'd rather have the subtitles inside the video file, see add subtitles to video.
SRT, VTT, ASS or TXT?
Wolfcaps exports four kinds of subtitle file. Pick the one that fits where it's going.
- SRT.
Works in every player. When in doubt, use this.
- VTT (WebVTT).
For web players, YouTube and course platforms.
- ASS.
Keeps a subtitle style (font, color, outline) for VLC, mpv and MKV.
- TXT.
Just the words, in paragraphs, for notes, documents or pasting elsewhere.
An SRT file doesn't store a style: each player decides how it looks. If you picked a subtitle look in Wolfcaps (Netflix, YouTube, Cinema, Classic yellow or TV box), export ASS or an MKV video to keep it.
A good SRT is easy to read
Automatic subtitles sometimes come out too long, too fast to read, or overlapping the next line. Wolfcaps has a quality check that finds these lines and offers fixes. You can also split, merge, insert or delete lines, use find & replace to fix a name everywhere, and undo anything.
You can keep the project in your browser, under Recent projects, then come back later, change something and export a new SRT.
Limits
- Speech recognition works for English, Hebrew and Russian only. Other spoken languages aren't supported yet.
- You need a computer with Chrome, Edge, Brave or another Chromium browser, or Safari 26 or newer on a Mac, and a GPU the browser can use (WebGPU). Firefox, iPhone and iPad aren't supported yet.
- The speech model is a one-time download of about 1.6 GB (2.1 GB for Hebrew Best), kept in your browser.
- Wolfcaps works with files. It doesn't download videos from links.
FAQ
Is this SRT generator free?
Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no upload. The AI runs on your own computer.
Can I make an SRT from a YouTube link?
No. Wolfcaps works with video and audio files on your computer, or files sent from your phone. It doesn't download videos from links.
Can I get the SRT in another language?
Yes. After the subtitles are made, click Translate… and pick one of 20 languages. Then export an SRT in the translated language, the original, or both as separate files.
My video already has subtitles inside. Can I get them as an SRT?
Yes, if they're stored as text. When you open the video, Wolfcaps finds the subtitles inside it and uses them instead of transcribing. Export them as an SRT like any others. Subtitles stored as pictures can't be read as text.
Can I edit the SRT file afterwards?
Yes. An SRT is plain text, so any text editor can change it. Or open the project again from Recent projects in Wolfcaps, edit it there and export a new file.
